Let Us Rejoice

But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you .
(Luke 6:27-28)

Let us ponder revolutions,
and freedom,
and the death of collective innocence.

Let us reward ourselves for feeling taller,
and smarter,
and disguising our immortality
with the lives of 3000.

Let us remember that the good and just
never give someone the spear
only to turn it back on them one day.

Let us rejoice with similar hastiness
when the lion who eats her young
is euthanized.

Let us rue the day we were ever bloodthirsty.

Yes. Sigh. Because I was watching the news last night, feeling--yes--a sense of relief that part of it was over. And then the cameras cut to the celebration in front of the White House, and I couldn't help but be sickened that we were cheering someone's death.

For me it's not just his death. It's how matter of fact we are in thinking we are right. We have all the absolutes. No one can disagree with us.
